The University of Wisconsin – Green Bay, commonly known as UW – Green Bay, UWGB or simply GB, is a public university located in Green Bay, which is the county seat of Brown County, in the US state of Wisconsin, with a population estimated at a number of more than 100 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. Green Bay is also the principal city of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has over 300 000 people, living within its limits, covering Kewaunee, Brown and Oconto Counties.
UWGB was founded in 1965, first having an environmental emphasis, offering today a wider array of degrees to its students. In 2009, UWGB’s student enrollment was of approximately 6500, including 5878 undergraduate students, the university being a participant in Wisconsin’s Growth Agenda that was created by Governor Jim Doyle, under which, the student enrollment is expected to reach 7500 students.
GB is an NCAA Division I school, being also a member of the Horizon League, and its athletic teams are known as the UW – Green Bay Phoenix, which are best known for their achievement in women’s basketball, reaching the NCAA tournament 8 times, including 4 times in the past 5 years. They also appeared 2 times in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), the team receiving its 1st national ranking in 2003, when it was ranked 16th in both the Coaches’ Poll and the Associated Press.
